Woolly Bolas Pillow Kit

  • Woolly Bolas
  • Inner Pillow Case
  • Prewashed Outer Pillow Case

The softest of all our fluff is our woolly bolas.   When the carding machine runs backward, instead of producing smooth batts, it produces small wool balls from just a few fibers twisted around each other. These woolly bolas maintain their lightness and airiness more than any other natural fill.

Woolly bolas are lightweight like wool batting, yet slightly mobile like shredded latex. Unlike wool batting, the bolas never compress, flatten perhaps, but a nightly kneading will loft them again. Do fluff them once a day to retain their fluff and keep them from felting into a mat. Unlike shredded latex, the bolas do not shift so easily inside the pillow case.  This is nestling pillow, a cloud pillow, a pillow that takes initial shaping or a few days to transform the handfuls of bolas into their soft comfort and to settle into their smooth, flat shape. As a matter of distinction, while light and soft, a conventional poly batting filled pillow may be squishier.

The cases are made with the same GOTS organic fabric that we use throughout our products. The outer case is double knit and the inner case a sateen, both 100% cotton, 100% organic. Both cases have a full length zipper on a short side. The outer case is prewashed so you can wash it on hot as you like without shrinking it.

This pillow kit is the not same price as if you were to buy the supplies piece by piece. To let you participate in the DIY aspect and to let you choose your amount of fill inside the case, we let you stuff the pillow yourself. Like all of our pillow kits, we include enough fill so that even the overstuffed pillow lover would be happy with the height of the pillow.

To buy more fill by the lb., view the woolly bolas product.

To compare the feel of woolly bolas to our other pillow fills, see this chart.

Travel: 12″ x 20″ – .75  lb fill
Standard: 20″ x 26″ – 2.5 lb fill
Queen: 20″ x 30″ – 3 lb fill
King: 20″ x 36″ – 4.0 lb fill
Body: 20″ x 60″ – 7 lb fill

Double Pocket Pillow Case

Double Pocket Pillow Case

Imagine a two sided pillow. Imagine having both comfort and support, just like your layered latex mattress or your wool mattress and its topper. Imagine the perfect pillow being only a flip away. Two pockets give you room to play, create and perfect. Stuff each pocket as full or as empty as you like.

COMBINATIONS TO CONSIDER

Wool Batting + Millet Hulls
Shredded Latex + Woolly Bolas
Millet Hulls + Kapok
Woolly Bolas + Wool Batting
Kapok + Shredded Latex

This organic pillow case of our thick double knit provides a smooth finish to your pillow. Despite its appearance of texture, this fabric is smooth and soft enough that many choose to sleep on it instead of their own pillow cases.

Each pocket has its own zipper, keeping each fill separated and adjustable. To eliminate the chance of the zipper coming open on its own and to silence the jingle of the zipper pull, we have hidden the pull inside a pocket to keep it secure.

SUGGESTED WEIGHTS for STANDARD SIZE

Wool Batting – 1 lb.
Shredded Latex – 2 lb.
Millet Hulls – 4 lb.
Woolly Bolas – 2 lbs.
Kapok – 2 lbs.

Fit for a King!

DIY mattress      DIY mattress

Our bed is fit for a king, thanks to Deborah and her team!

We ordered a medium firm latex slab with wool and cover from Deborah.  The mattress has made our bed very comfortable again.  For those who are interested to know, the latex sits between a 3″ thick cotton mattress and a 5-6″ wool topper, which after 3 years of compression had become hard (see the first photo).

Before I ordered, I was most concerned how to get the firmness right.  I called Deborah, told her our body weights and heights and the problem of our bed, she correctly suggested the medium firmness.  But when the slab arrived, because I was too used to our hard bed, I panicked and reordered a firm slab, using Deborah’s “buy and try” program.  It took some time for the replacement to arrive, by then I had already got used to the medium slab and realized my mistake.  The firm slab proved to be too firm indeed.  When I zipped up the mattress cover at last,  I had one more amazement to tell: the cover looks very simple, but I would not try to make it myself because Deborah’s seamstress has made it fit to perfection.  The cover is not one bit smaller or bigger than the latex, so that it feels completely smooth (See the second photo).

During the whole process, I have learned not only to trust Deborah’s professional experience and judgment but also to highly respect the quality of her work and the reliability of her service.  When I became really hesitant and frustrated, she was consistently patient and nice.  I know on-line shopping for a mattress sounds hard, but my experience has taught me that it really depends upon whom you are dealing with.  Now I know our body takes time to tell which firmness is right, I begin to doubt going to the store in person to try mattresses is an easier way.  Overall I am quite happy with this shopping experience at Deborah’s site.

Off the Charts

On my journey to do a DIY all natural bed I came across DIY Natural Bedding. I called up to ask some questions, and I was delighted that I found someone on the other end of the phone who cared about and could understand what I needed. The kindness and intelligence of the customer service is outstanding (as others have said: it’s true they do research your needs and questions if they don’t have immediate answers!).

The quality of what I ordered is off the charts. The prices are cheaper than just about anyone’s anywhere else. The shipping was done in a timely manner; everything was properly packed to protect against the elements and bugs, which is more than I can say for a lot of other all natural bedding companies.

Thanks to DIY I have a fantastic 1/2 queen day bed made up of two 100% natural 1/2 queen dunlop latex toppers — one 3″ soft and one 3″ extra soft — with an organic 100% cotton encasement and luxurious 1/2 queen organic wool puddle pad (yes, it’s luxurious). They also made the ticking and wool puddle pad for my night bed.

I also want to make dust mites covers because someone in the house has a terrible allergy. Thanks to DIY’s help and perhaps above all patience as well as a good bit of inspiration, I am on my way to making them myself using the ticking pattern they sell and their zippers (I found the cloth elsewhere. But they even helped me in the search to find the proper cloth). I am making it myself for less half the price of any dust mite cover on the internet of the same quality (it’s very hard to find and quite expensive to buy a dust mite mattress encasement that opens like a book).

I am very happy with my purchase as well as experience working with them.

Twill Ticking

GOTS Organic Twill Ticking

This strong twill ticking is perfect for stuffing with a loose fill to make your mattress.  Wool flake, kapok, or any other of our loose fills would fit nicely inside. Its strength means that it can handle even our 10″ tufting needle. Its durability means that it will last under the pressure of tufts.

Made with our GOTS organic twill cotton fabric, sturdy and natural:  100% organic, 100% cotton.

The zipper on this ticking opens along three of the top edges of the ticking.  This upper opening let you use the sidewalls of the ticking for support of the fill as you fill the ticking up.

To use this ticking with our wool flake or with kapok, our wool mattress tutorial and our tufting tutorial would be helpful.  To keep your loose fill from shifting, visit our Supplies page for a needle and twine.

Knit Ticking around Latex

How to Build a Mattress with Knit Ticking

PROS
  • Washable
Preshrunk and machine washable. No longer do you have to spot clean the the ticking while it is on the latex.  Freshen your entire mattress by washing this ticking.
  • Flexible
This knit case will flex with your body and the latex as you move. The inherent stretch of knit fabrics lets their looped threads pull apart from each other when pressure is applied.
  • Thinish
While this double knit fabric is actually fairly thick for just one layer of fabric, those we endearingly call “latex purists” like that they can be completely absorbed by the latex with this case. Every pressure point can be entirely soothed through this ticking.
  • Price
Having just one simple layer of fabric, this ticking is very affordable.
CONS
  • Thinish
With its one layer of fabric, it protects the latex from dust and debris, but not from heat sources, sunlight.  It may give the latex a lesser life than the thicker quilted ticking.  To compensate for its thinness, some add a layer or two of wool batting around the latex and under the ticking. The wool batting’s thickness protects the latex and softens the latex’s bounce. Since the wool batting does not come quilted, you save the cost of the quilting and thus maintain the affordability of the knit ticking.
  • Flexibility
As you put consistent pressure sleeping on the latex, you may notice that one slab or another starts to stretch a little farther towards the edges than the others.  The clean lines of your mattress can be renewed by unzipping the ticking and flopping the layer back into place.  A layer or two of wool batting wrapped around the latex will serve as extra strength and slightly prevent this occasional shifting.

Quilted Ticking

How to Build your Mattress with Quilted Ticking
PROS
  • Beauty
With our soft double knit fabric on top, this ticking made for your DIYing will make your mattress feel and look better than your conventional mattresses. The rolling diamond quilted pattern adds a refined look to your mattress.
  • Thickness
Its thickness serves your comfort as well as protection of the latex layers hidden inside. The less exposed to elements like heat, sunlight, and poor air quality, the longer your latex will stay fresh.
  • Wool Layer
This 1″ layer of wool is enough to cool your sleep with its temperature regulating abilities. It is also enough to act as a flame retardant if needed.
  • Simplicity
This is the simplest build with the most components to it.  Zip the ticking shut around the fill and you have a mattress.
CONS
  • Price
This ticking with its two layers of organic cotton fabric and layer of wool has a lot to it, add the cost of quilting the layers together and you have our most expensive ticking.
  • Thickness
Some find the thickness to stiffen the feel of the latex slightly. While not a significant change, those we call “latex purists’ tend to avoid the extra fabric between them and the latex.

If you need help picking which firmness of natural latex might be comfortable inside your quilted ticking, check out The Banana Test post and give us a call if you have further questions.

How to choose Firmness for Cushions

Posted on 1 Comment
Natural Latex Cushion

These tips are based on the assumption that the primary purpose of the couch will be for sitting on.  If the comfort of the couch is more important for sleeping on, see The Banana Test for determining firmness.

ORGANIC NATURAL LATEX

  1. Choose firmness based on depth first (there are five firmnesses – D65, D75, D80, D85 and D90):
    For BASE CUSHIONS

    1. 3” or less, get a D85 or D90
    2. 4”, aim for a D80 or an D85
    3. 5”- 6”, pick between D80, D85 and D90

    For BACK CUSHIONS

    1. 1-2″, get a D75 or D80
    2. 3-4” or less, get a D65 or D75
    3. 5”- 6” pick between D65 or D75
  2. Choose firmness based on preference of feel second:
    1. Do you like it firm or like a standard couch, rather cushy? The firmer the latex, the more supportive it is and the less you will sink into it.

Rules of Thumb

  1. In base cushions, D80 is considered medium in couches. D85 is considered medium-firm in couch cushions. D90 is considered firm.
  2. In back cushions, D65 is considered soft and D75 considered medium. Depending on the depth, as a pair, a D65 on the and a D80 on the base work well together, as do as D75 on the back and a D85 on the base,
  3. The thinner the latex, the less firm it feels. Depth can make up for the firmness. A 2” D85 will feel the same as a 3” D80. A 3” D90 will feel like a 4” D85.
  4. The heavier you are the deeper latex you will need. Average adult weight (130-230 lbs.) will not feel the supporting wood or spring foundation or on 5 – 6” of latex if the latex is firm, extra firm or hard. A 300 lb adult will want a minimum of 6” of hard latex or deeper of a softer latex.
  5. Cutting the latex ½” to 1“ larger than the cushion dimensions gives a nice full look. The firmer the foam, the less we will add to the dimensions.

Loose Fills

Do your back cushions have a non foam fill like batting or feathers? Consider using

  • wool batting
  • cotton batting
  • shredded latex and kapok mixed
  • woolly bolas

Our wool batting or cotton batting will be a great substitute for the typical dacron batting used. Both are lofty and will be a soft fill. Over time, they do compress in areas of use. They are sold by the 88″ yard. The battings are also great for wrapping around your cushions, more info here.

Our woolly bolas also make a great feather replacement.  They are always soft, a little dense, as light as a standard pillow. They do a really good job keeping their shape and staying in the whole pillow as opposed to some of the loose fills that sink to the bottom of the case because of their weight. They are also not messy!

A mix, often 50/50 of shredded latex and kapok can also make a soft cushion and even bean bag. On its own, shredded latex is squishy and bouncy; kapok is light and airy.  Together the kapok fills in the spaces between the shreds of latex, making the pillow smoother and giving it more volume without increasing its weight significantly. To be fair, both fills are a little messy to work with. More info on comparing all the different loose pillow fills available here.

If you know the dimensions, you can calculate how much you need here.

Wool Topper Kit

Wool Topper Kit

Save yourself the clicks and put your DIY wool topper project in the cart with this kit containing all your supplies.

This wool topper kit is 3″ high when freshly lofted, the same height as our premade one. It will compress about 30% to a smooth, comforting topper.

Tutorial Features

  • Pictures and Directions included
  • Crib – Eastern King Dimensions included

This wool topper tutorial uses pictures as well as directions and dimensions to explain how to sew a wool topper for your bed. The steps is easy to follow, especially if you skip the optional zipper step. The PDF covers how to sew the fabric, how to layer the wool batts inside and where to place your tufts. The fabric may be hand sewn; a machine is not needed but does quicken the job.

The two-sided zipper option is included in the pattern so that when you reloft your wool in 8 years, instead of unstitching two seams, you merely unzip it and untuft it. Then you send your wool to a mill for rewashing and carding. When it comes time to reassemble, all you need to do is layer the wool inside, zip it shut and tuft again.

Care

More wool batting than suggested amounts below may be purchased to fill your topper. However, beware that due to the loftiness of wool batting, too many layers of such wool may trench in your body positions, even with proper initial care as mentioned in the next paragraph. It is advised to not exceed more than one batt more than the amounts listed below.

Special care is required of wool toppers the first few months. Instructions are here and are also included in your pattern.

Printing

The tutorial will be available for download via a link in the receipt emailed to you or from your account if you create one during the checkout process as well as from the thank you page after you checkout.  It is highly recommended that you print it in color, so you can see the details of the pictures.

Amount of Wool Included in Wool Topper Kit

Crib: 3 lbs. wool
Twin/ Twin XL:
 6 lbs. wool
Full: 8.5 lbs. wool
Queen: 9.5 lbs. wool

Organic Latex Sofa

Posted on Leave a comment

We are thrilled with the GOLS organic latex foam that you provided for our sofa reupholstering. It is the most comfortable sofa in the world and hands down the best place ever to take a nap. It was significantly less expensive for us to have our Baker sofa upholstered with your organic latex and organic cotton batting than to purchase a new latex sofa. It’s very hard to find a supplier of GOLS upholstery foam. We are so glad to have found you and know where we will go for our next bed and future upholstery projects.

Wool Pillow Kit

Farm Wool Pillow Kit

Wool sleeps cool. Its fibers are hollow so they can absorb both heat and body moisture. The fibers cannot harbor anything though, so they release substances to the air for dissipation. Like our kapok pillow, the wool pillow is both lightweight and a uniform shape, so that your sleeping surface is smooth and consistent.

The soft pillows are preferred by back and stomach sleepers, children and for pillow cuddlers. The firm pillows are not firm, but needed some label to designate their addition height over the soft pillows. They are preferred by side sleepers or those with broad shoulders.

Wool will compress slowly over the years and after about 8 years, you will probably want to get it relofted. We do not provide that service but St. Peter Woolen Mill can wash and recard the wool for you to restore your pillow to its original fluffy state. When you will start to notice the wool’s compression (see Care tab), probably after a few months, if you haven’t cut any wool off from your original roll to add back into your pillow for fresh height (see video below), you can purchase wool by the 1/2 lb. here to add to your pillow.

The cases are made with the same GOTS organic fabric that we use throughout our products. The outer case is doubleknit and the inner case a sateen, both 100% cotton, 100% organic. The outer case is prewashed so you can wash it as hot as you like without shrinking it. Both cases have a full length zipper on a short side. To eliminate the chance of the zipper coming open on its own and to silence the jingle of the zipper pull, we have hidden each pull inside a pocket to keep it secure.

This kit is not the same price as selecting the purchasing the same products separately. It is discounted here to account for its combined components. This kit does not come assembled.  To let you participate in the DIY aspect and to let you choose your amount of fill inside the case, we let you stuff the pillow yourself.

To compare the feel of wool batting to our other pillow fills, see this chart.

Here is a short video on how to assemble your wool pillow.

Foraging your Own Bedding – Shimul or Bombax Silk

Posted on Leave a comment

Shimul flower

Another foraging opportunity… if you live in China or India or Cuba or really, the Tropics. This tree has silk fibers much like the kapok tree and is commonly used to make mattresses in Asia.

This plant has a very long bloom period. It opens first bloom in fall, lights up the sky throughout winter and may still have a bloom or two in spring.

Like the kapok tree, it is a dry deciduous tree that loses its leaves in the dry season and replaces them with huge, bulky red flowers near top of tree with wide petals. The flowers up to 6″ across are edible.

For interest’s sake, the red-silk cotton tree, Bombax ceiba, is sometimes mistakenly called “Kapok” because it produces floss. The true Kapok is Ceiba pentandra and is not common in Florida. The red-silk cotton is in the Malvaceae family, but is sometimes placed in the Bombacaceae family by some authors.

Just like wool mattresses, sleepers recard their silk every few years as it compacts very firmly. Natural bug-repellents are used mixed in the cotton like eucalyptus or strong versions of mint or lavender.

Quilted Pillow Case

Quilted Wool Pillow Case

This thick, quilted pillowcase provides a soft barrier between you and the fill inside your pillow. It smooths out the feel of shredded latex and cushions millet hulls. It continues the temperature regulation of wool batting and woolly bolas and adds body and form to kapok and shredded latex.

This quilted pillowcase uses our wool batting sandwiched between two layers of GOTS organic cotton fabric.  The outer fabric is our smooth, soft double knit and the inner our sateen.

One short side has a full length zipper. To eliminate the chance of the zipper coming open on its own and to silence the jingle of the zipper pull, we have hidden the pull inside a pocket to keep it secure.

Our quilted pillowcase is the ultimate small business product as two home businesses, in addition to our small business, are supported by your purchase: the fabric is quilted by a local long arm quilter and the wool is from small local, farms.

We use this pillow case with our millet hull pillow kit.

We love our mattress!

Posted on Leave a comment

My boyfriend and I were sleeping on an air mattress a year ago and decided we wanted a nontoxic mattress. We plunged into the confusing world of researching mattresses online and created a spreadsheet listing 15 companies and all the pros and cons of each. When we eventually found DIY Natural Bedding they came out at the top of the list because their 9″ latex layers (three 3″ layers) mattress was one of the most affordable ones available. Also, Deborah was amazingly great at getting to the bottom of what is really going on with natural bedding suppliers and also was so great at answering all my many questions, even researching the answer and then getting back to me if she didn’t have the answer on hand. At the time, I noted that this company is “very trustworthy, does good research.”

I had a number of concerns  – I was concerned the mattress cover would inhibit the natural way the latex bends around the body; it would be a shame to spend so much on latex and then ruin it with a tight fitted, stiff cover. I am happy to report that the organic cotton knit mattress cover is soft and stretchy and contours to the latex perfectly.

Another concern I had was smell because I had bought a latex topper once that smelled really strong for a couple weeks at least. With the latex from DIY Natural Bedding there was never any smell, not even when it first arrived. I am extremely chemically sensitive and I have not ever had any issues with this bed.

We had a hell of a time figuring out the densities to order, and we ended up having to get some replacements. Deborah’s policy allowing 2 months for replacements was great because for various reasons we took a long time figuring out what was going to work.

We got the wool batting to place under the cover but we have never used it because we don’t like the way it sticks to the latex – we tend to rearrange the latex every once in awhile just to see how it feels and we don’t like pulling the wool off the latex every time (not much sticks it’s just I realize I like things really clean and my personal preference would be to have the wool encased in something). We may get some fabric and sew a wool topper with the wool at some point, or a blanket. I made a huge pillow out of some of it, which is really divine, although it does need fluffing up every once in a while.

The mattress is super comfortable just with the knit cover, although I know we need to get something else to protect it from spills and also to offer more general protection like from oxygen. We probably would have been better off with the quilted ticking – I was worried it wouldn’t stretch enough but now that I see how the organic cotton cloth stretches probably the quilted ticking would be stretchy enough too.

And just fyi, I weigh 230 and my boyfriend weighs 220 lbs and what ended up working out for both of us is the bottom layer firm, and both the middle and top layers extra firm. We hate the soft and medium as they compress too much and feel extremely hard, but I guess for people weighing less they would be great.

We love our mattress! – H.H.

Product shipped to Peru made our sleeping better….

natural latex made it to Peru

natural latex made it to Peru natural latex made it to PeruWe are from Minnesota but are living in Peru for a couple of years. We sleep on latex in the States, but of course moving our family down here with 8 suitcases didn’t leave room or weight to bring our beds. We used firm innerspring beds (about all that you can get here) and I was longing for at least a latex topper. I hopped online and looked at the clearance section, and lo and behold, there was a soft layer of latex that was perfect for our needs! We needed to have it cut down, but when it was, it was ideal for making a full sized topper as well as a pack and play sized sheet with a little left over. Deborah was a pleasure to work with through the whole process, helping assure that it could be safely smushed into a package that would make it on the plane (within weight and size requirements). She shipped it to a friend visiting us in Peru. The latex was shipped to another state and then worked through three flights on its way to us and it was in absolutely perfect condition. The packaging really worked well. Since sleeping on the topper, my back hurts less and I’m very excited about the chance to have a more comfortable sleeping arrangement. We even looked at buying another mattress here, but they are all the same- hard and uncomfortable. Deborah has always had excellent customer service in all of my interactions with her- knowledgeable, kind, responsive, and a problem solver. And now she can say she has placed products internationally!

Other products: I had purchased wool dryer balls, wool batting, and a mattress cover from DIY natural bedding while in Minnesota. I think the dryer balls are the best I’ve used (the felting makes a huge difference…I have three brands, hers, wool covered in upcycled sweaters, and wrapped wool balls.) The DIY brand is the longest lasting and best value. I didn’t get a chance to use the wool batting before we left, but I’m looking forward to making some 1860s quilted hoods and quilts for my reenactment group. And I really like the organic cotton cover (we used it to cover up some latex that was extra when we swapped out a couple of layers on our latex bed). – K. P.

Futons, Couch Cushions and Latex

Posted on 1 Comment

Natural latex foam can be cut to almost any size. This ability to be resized, along with its flexibility and its comfort, makes it a high-end fill to any piece of furniture.

fancy line

SIZE

Our Arpico natural latex comes in 6” slabs and as large as 76” x 80.” Since it is Dunlop processed, the molds are as large as an Eastern King. Talalay processed mold are only as large as a Queen. A 6” slab gives you enough depth for a couch cushion or the ability to trim it down an inch or two.

To obtain a quote on a custom size,  visit our Custom Cut Latex Calculator.

DEPTH and FIRMNESS

The depth of the piece will affect your preference of firmness. A 3” extra firm or hard piece would be as thin as you would want. Four inches or five inches would be more comfortable and allow more people types to sit on it. Six inches is definitely a safe choice. A person of any weight could sit on it and not feel the slats or springs underneath it. When you get into the six inch depth, you can decrease the density of the foam to a firm if you like. A back cushion for a couch commonly is cut out of a Soft piece of latex as there is no gravity holding the sitter to it, only body weight.

Why is thicker better? When a person’s weight is pinpointed directly into one spot of the latex, the pressure points are much larger than when a sleeper stretches out and spreads his pressure points out.

WOOL

In short, I would consider a wool wrap around your latex if using it for upholstery purposes. It is not necessary, but it has a few purposes. Besides acting as a physical barrier between the latex and the elements that cause latex to deteriorate, it also can act a little bit of the softening that a down blanket would. Consider it a way to ease into the comfortable support of latex and to reduce the bounce. It always serves to buffer the air space between the latex and the case.

FRAMES

We do not make frames, but I have multiple customer who specialize in custom furniture, woodwork, titanium welding and metalwork. Contact me for their contact information.

SEWING

Send us your fabric and we can sew it up for you or we can use our fabric to sew you cases. Woven fabrics vs. knits are strong and durable for upholstery use.

If you are looking for organic fabrics, there are more sources than ever before. Check out Two Sisters Eco Textiles or  Organic Cotton Plus and note their color grown cotton fabrics as well as the hemp and wool fabrics. They also have subtle patterns appropriate for upholstery uses. GOTS organic is the best standard available but the standard has only been around a few years so it is a taking a while for many manufacturers to catch up. Organic fabric (USDA) is common, even fabric.com carries it.

Cording is a decorative accent that can be added to the edges of a cushion. We can add it for you if you like. However, if your latex will be folded for display as a futon, I do not recommend cording as it will not necessarily perch properly on the edge of the latex. No need to highlight an askew seam. Another decorative accent is gussets; gussets are side panels sewing on sewn on the sides of the cushion. Pictures available on our Custom Sewing Page.

GENERAL STRUCTURE

According to the web, cheap sofas use foam alone. Better sofas use foam core within a down & feather blanket (wrap). The ratio of down to feathers is usually only a 10/90 ratio, but the greater the ration of down to feathers, the better. Even better sofas use a spring core encased in foam. The best of the better sofas use either a spring core that is encased in foam that is then encased in a down wrap or an all-down and feather cushion.

The very best couches a use latex core with springs. In order to get this combination you would have to visit an upscale upholsterer. (Yes, customers do take our latex to such shops.) This style is rarely composed in the United States but apparently, the French do so. Good upholstery, depending upon the style, has lots of springs. There can be springs in the seat, the back, and in the arms. That’s what makes a great upholstery job look “full” and it keeps the sofa looking that way for years but it’s very expensive and usually seen only on hand made sofas. Often on these handmade sofas, you will see hand stitching as well. This upholstery company has some reupholstered pictures of before and after of some high quality piece of furniture.

For more reading on upholstering tips, here is a summary article.

Tutorial

  • Pictures and Directions both included
  • Twin – King Dimensions all included

This tutorial uses pictures as well as directions, dimensions  and pictures to explain the best way to sew our expandable ticking. This ticking opens like a book with a three-sided zipper and includes a second zipper designed to hide 3″ more of fabric folded into the sidewall. The panel can be unzipped and opened up when you are ready to insert another slab of latex or more wool. To purchase the premade ticking, view its page here.

You need only one tutorial for all the different sizes of bedding as a chart is included with measurements and cuts, Twin to King and 3″ expanding to 6″ as well as 6″ expanding to 9″. If you want to make a custom sized case, let us know and we can calculate yardages for you. Our knit fabric can be used for this case. Our quilted fabric would be too thick to be folded over in the side panel.

NOTE: It is worth mentioning, a basic understanding of sewing terms and techniques is assumed and this pattern is not meant to be a sewing tutorial. Sewing your own mattress case is completely doable, but if you are one of those who claim to only be able to sew on buttons, this particular ticking is not a good starter project.

Printing

The tutorial will be available for download via a link in the receipt emailed to you or from your account if you create one during the checkout process as well as from the thank you page after you checkout.  It is highly recommended that you print it in color, so you can see the details of the pictures.

Do you want to sew some ticking, but can’t find the 319″ length of zipper you need?  We have zipper on a spool that we can cut to your specified length. We supply it in a dark beige color, a simple contrast to our natural colored cotton fabrics. This is the same zipper we use in our tickings.

Unless more zipper pulls are requested, one pull will be included with each cut.  If you would like more, for example, you’ll want two pulls for the Expandable Ticking Pattern, specify so in the Customer Notes section on the Checkout Page.

Wool Comforter

Wool Comforter

Sleep under this lofty wool comforter that is warm but not hot. The composition and shape of wool’s fiber make it free of static and competent at wicking away moisture, regulating your temperature yet insulating you with your own body heat.

Entirely made in the USA, our local woolen mill sews it from wool batts from our local farms. The virgin wool is not superwashed, leaving it soft and supple instead of itchy and scratchy.  The organic sateen fabric is the same that we use on our wool toppers and inner pillow cases and sell by the yard for your DIY comforter and topper projects.

Simple channels adorn this wool comforter, leaving it decorative for everyday use or suitable to be hidden away inside a duvet cover. We make our duvet cover with ties in the corners and a zippered closure; it is made out of the same fabric as the comforter, our organic sateen.  If you have a decorative fabric you would like sewed as a duvet cover, please contact us.

WHICH WEIGHT?

Tropical weight is perfect for the cool months of Florida, Texas, California, Arizona and other warm weather states. Its thin layer of wool will take you through the warming Spring into the start of summer in the northern states. Sleep with air conditioning all summer? Tropical weight will let your body heat raise to a healing temperature for good REM sleep.

Live life simply: swap out 8 layers of cotton blankets with one Regular Weight Comforter! Regular weight is a great 20-50 degree weather blanket.

If your weather just got down to 20 and below, curl up in our Winter Weight Wool Comforter. Great at keeping out the drafts to keep you cozy.

Wool and Latex Combo

Posted on Leave a comment

The Case for Wool on a Latex Mattress

Wool and latex share similar properties, so they accompany each other well on a mattress. They both won’t mildew, won’t harbor dust mites, are breathable, flexible and are good at distributing heat so you don’t end up too cold or too hot.

In a latex mattress, wool has another purpose as well as a comfort layer. It is an excellent protector of the latex. Latex is biodegradable; you can throw it in your compost pile when you are done with it. A few months later, it will be completely crumbled. Wool is not as biodegradable; you can weave it into garden mats to keep down the weeds and it will take 2 years for it to degrade rather than a few months. Natural latex contains an antioxidant, much like vitamin A is in our foods.  Once the antioxidant dissipates, the latex can be affected by oxygen. Direct sunlight, direct heat (as from a vent) and poor air quality can cause the latex to yellow and harden sooner than otherwise. Since latex is biodegradable, it appreciates being wrapped to keep it from the elements that cause it to prematurely harden.  Thus, the dense wool wrap adds a breathable layer of defense against the elements.

Some DIYers like to wrap their natural latex slabs with a batt of wool, some just like the quilted ticking with wool inside it. While a second cotton case would alternatively protect the latex, cotton just is not as nice of a fiber as wool. Also, a carded wool batt is more affordable than cotton fabric being a less processed fiber.

How it Works

Here we supply parts you can use to DIY your own bedding.  We can do all the sewing and washing and cutting or you can do those tasks yourself.

You can visit us in either Lafayette, IN (an hour northwest of Indianapolis) or in Brooklyn Park, MN to see all these products and to try out the different firmnesses of latex.

MATTRESS

To make a mattress, pick out a fill (wool flake or natural latex or both wool batting and natural latex) and pick out a presewn ticking, which is a zippered shell or case (either quilted or knit or expandable knit. In our supplies section, you will find patterns and fabric to sew your own ticking. Common combinations of mattress making supplies are listed here.

To get an overview of common types of mattresses built from our supplies and how to assemble them, click on each ticking’s link below to see the possibilities as well as pros and cons for each build.

Quilted Ticking, AKA “The Simplest Method” or “For Longevity”

Knit Ticking, AKA “The Budget Method” or “For Latex Purists”

Twill Ticking, AKA “The Durable Method” or “For the DIYer”

To see a full explanation as well as complete assembly of a mattress in just 20 minutes, watch this video.

PILLOWS

To make a pillow, pick out a fill and cases. They are sold separately or in kits.

TOPPERS

Wool

Finished wool toppers with our farm wool are available.

To make a lofty wool topper, visit our supplies page to find the pattern and fabric to use. We also supply kits with fabric, pattern, tufting needle, twine and optional zipper closure.

Natural Latex

To make a latex topper, pick out a slab of latex (usually soft or medium firmness) and pick out a ticking or visit our supplies page to find a pattern and fabric to use.

COMFORTER

Finished wool comforters with our farm wool are available.

To make a comforter, decide how many batts of wool you want, then visit our supplies page to find a pattern (COMING) and fabric to use.  A comforter and a topper are similar and use the same supplies, but you’ll probably use only 2-3 batts of wool for a comforter and the pattern displays a knife edge instead of box corners.

WOOL BLANKET

You can buy a finished wool blanket made with wool grown, spun and woven all by small businesses in the US or you can buy the blanket fabric by the yard and make your own custom sized blanket.

WOOL PUDDLE PAD

You can buy a finished organic needle felted wool puddle pad (with serged edges and elastic straps) or you can add the finishing touches.

To make a wool puddle pad, decide how many yards you want of our 90″ needle felted wool. You will get to cut the fabric to size, serge the edges yourself and add elastic corner straps if you like.

Shredded Latex Pillow Kit

shredded natural latex pillow stack
  • Shredded Organic Latex
  • Inner Pillow Case
  • Outer Pillow Case

Shredded organic latex is the same rubber that we sell in slabs, only it is shredded in tiny pieces. It is hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, dust mite resistant, temperature regulating and is rather bouncy.

A shredded latex pillow has some properties similar to a feather pillow as it can be fluffed, but unlike a feather pillow, the shredded latex mostly stays in the same spot without sinking. It can be punched into place and is deadly in pillow fights (especially in an extra large pillow case). Instead of floating on top like a kapok pillow, your head is slightly nestled in the shredded latex. The latex will never go flat and has the same 20 year lifespan as the slabs.

If you are a pillow cuddler, this is a great pillow to squeeze. If you are a multiple position sleeper, the shredded latex conveniently can be shoved into the corners of the case to create a hollow in the center for back sleeping and higher edges for side sleeping.

To buy more loose fill or to purchase the pillow parts separately, see our Pillow Parts page.

To compare the feel of shredded latex to our other pillow fills, see this chart.

Travel: 12″ x 20″ – 1.5 lb fill
Standard: 20″ x 26″ – 4.5 lb fill
Queen: 20″ x 30″ – 6 lb fill
King: 20″ x 36″ – 7 lb fill
Body: 20″ x 60″ – 12 lb fill

Custom: You name the size, we’ll sew it.

Kapok Pillow Kit

Kapok & Wool Pillow Stack
  • Kapok Fiber
  • Inner Pillow Case
  • Outer Pillow Case

Kapok fiber is the seed pod fluff of a rainforest tree called the Ceiba tree or the silk cotton tree. The pods are harvested in the East and the trees are left standing. The fluff is actually buoyant; it was and still is used in life jackets and life rings. It will not mold or mildew, just like all our fills. Its feel is similar to the light weight feeling of down, but without the allergies and the loss of loft that go with feathers. The silk is luxurious to the touch and washable.

Pillows stuffed with kapok act most like standard pillows. They have loft, can be fluffed, do not need to be punched in the middle of the night and retain their shape well. Despite the softness of the fibers, due to the inherent weakness of the fibers, they will break into smaller pieces over time. This breaking down compresses the fibers and in time, the pillow reveals its true firmness. We include at least a lb. of extra fibers with your kit purchase; then you have fill ready to restuff your pillow with if you want it to resume its loft.

The cases are made with the same GOTS organic fabric that we use throughout our products. The outer case is double knit and the inner case a sateen, both 100% cotton, 100% organic.

Not only can the outside case be washed, but so can the inner case with the kapok in it, just like down pillows. Wash in your washing machine or with the hose and dry thoroughly. Because they are so dense, drying the pillow outside in the sun will take weeks to dry the kapok. It is better to dry in your dryer multiple times, about 3 loads length to ensure all the fiber are dry throughout.

This pillow kit is the not same price as if you were to buy the supplies piece by piece. The fiber for this pillow has been fluffed already. If you want to fluff it yourself or buy more fill for your pillow or to purchase the pillow parts separately, see our Pillow Parts page.

This pillow kit does not come assembled. To let you participate in the DIY aspect and to let you choose your amount of fill inside the case, we let you stuff the pillow yourself.

To compare the feel of kapok to our other pillow fills, see this chart.

Travel: 12″ x 20″ – 1 lb fill
Standard: 20″ x 26″ – 3 lb fill
Queen: 20″ x 30″ – 3.7 lb fill
King: 20″ x 36″ – 4.5 lb fill
Body: 19″ x 60″ – 7 lb fill

Millet Hull Pillow Kit

Millet hulls are the shell of the edible seed. Ours are grown from organic millet fields in Colorado.  The hulls are hypo-allergenic, are not habitable to dust mites, are cool to sleep on and are supportive and durable.

The millet hull pillow is a firm pillow, excellent for nestling in your head in its perfect spot and resting there all night. While it is not a pillow that can be fluffed as its fill is rather dense, it certainly is ready for the middle of the night shove to adjust it to a slightly new height as you roll over. If you want a custom contour pillow, this is the pillow for you.  The millet hulls can be easily molded around your head and under your neck. When slept on, they do not budge all night or flatten on you, unless you roll over and create a new hollow for your head. Sleepers transitioning from feather pillows like the pillow’s ability to stay thin.

This pillow kit is sold with a quilted wool case to provide a cushion atop of the millet. The case can be gently hand washed (see Care tab). For those of you who like wool’s natural abilities to repel dust mites, you can know your millet pillow is keeping you comfortable and bite free. We do not include a liner with this pillow as the liner inhibits the free flowing movement of the hulls.

This quilted pillowcase uses wool sandwiched between two layers of GOTS organic cotton fabric.  The feel is almost exactly the same as our Quilted Ticking. The outer fabric is our smooth, soft double knit and the inner our sateen. One short side has a full length zipper. To eliminate the chance of the zipper coming open on its own and to silence the jingle of the zipper pull, we have hidden the pull inside a pocket to keep it secure.

This kit is not the same price as selecting the purchasing the same products separately. It is discounted here to account for its combined components. To buy more loose fill or to choose the standard inner or outer pillow cases, see our Pillow Parts page.

This kit does not come assembled.  To let you participate in the DIY aspect and to let you choose your amount of fill inside the case, we let you stuff the pillow yourself.

Knit Ticking

Knit Ticking

A simple, box cornered mattress case with a three-sided zipper. It opens like a book (one long side remains unzipped) and is both preshrunk and washable. It is a smooth and thick fabric, ideal for letting your pressure points sink into the natural latex or wool underneath it. It also will protect your fill from dust and lint while containing it smoothly. Its slight stretch is due to the form of the fabric itself, the weaving of the threads, no elastic.

Our natural latex slabs fit inside very comfortably, whether they are in a bed mattress or a futon mattress. Latex’s flexible, bouncy nature fits this fabric perfectly. If you want a wool mattress, use our Twill Ticking and if you want a wool topper, use the sateen provided in our topper kit or have us make it for you.

Made with our GOTS organic double knit cotton fabric, flexible and natural: 100% organic, 100% cotton.

NOTE: This ticking is excellent as a dust cover and a flexible barrier between you and the latex. If you want to keep your latex fresh for its full lifespan, add multiple layers of wool batting inside the case or choose the Quilted Ticking as its thickness will protect the latex from elements that cause to degrade.

To sew your own ticking, see patterns the Box Corner Ticking Pattern or its Kit that comes with fabric and zipper.
